New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president in 2020 on Monday, Jan. 13, touting the former vice president's ability to defeat President Donald Trump in November and unify the country once in office.
On Twitter, Maloney wrote: "As president, Joe Biden will deliver the local tax relief, infrastructure, clean drinking water & support for our military and veterans that the American public wants."
"As voters go to the polls in the coming months, I hope they'll join me & vote for Joe," wrote Maloney, a Democrat from Cold Spring.
Maloney's district includes Orange and Putnam counties as well as parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties.
Maloney initially supported former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke. O’Rourke ended his campaign in November 2019.
Maloney's endorsement is timely as six Democratic candidates including Biden square off on Tuesday night, Jan. 14, for the first Democratic presidential primary debate of 2020—and the final one before the Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses.
In this interview with POLITICO, Maloney stressed Biden’s electability—predicting that he's the most likely Democrat to be able to defeat Republican Trump in the 18th Congressional District.
Maloney's Hudson Valley district favored Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton of Chappaqua by 2 percentage points in 2016.
“He’s just got the unique combination of experience and decency that I think are gonna win voters like ones I represent,” Maloney told POLITICO, saying he thinks that Biden has the leadership skills to take the country forward and fix the damage caused by Trump.
Chele Chiavacci Farley, the Republican-endorsed candidate for Congress, said that Maloney's endorsement of Joe Biden for president "shines a spotlight on the shameless hypocrisy of the American left."
"It’s clear that Maloney hopes that Americans don’t see that it is the Democrats who have dangerously fractured our nation by focusing exclusively on impeachment of our President, rather than any legislative achievements," Farley said in a press statement released on Tuesday.
Farley said that "thanks to President Trump’s economic policies, we are experiencing one of the strongest economies in our history with record low unemployment, more than 7 million jobs added, a historically high stock market and strong consumer confidence."
"The 2020 election represents a very clear choice between socialist policy meaning more government control—as embraced by leftists like Sean Patrick Maloney and Joe Biden—or continued free market economy and prosperity under President Trump," Farley said.
